Element and modality: how twelve signs come about
Each element appears in three modalities. The cardinal sign opens a season, the fixed sign holds its strength, the mutable sign passes it on. Four elements times three modalities make the twelve signs: Aries is cardinal fire, Leo fixed fire, Sagittarius mutable fire, and so on around the wheel. Two signs of the same element share a temperament, but their modality makes them act differently.
