Calculate your birth chart for free

Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It shows where the Sun, the Moon and all the planets stood — and what that means for your life. Birth Codex calculates your chart with Swiss Ephemeris, the gold standard of astronomical calculation, based on NASA's JPL ephemeris.

What your birth chart includes

Sun, Moon & ascendant — The three most important points of your chart: your core (Sun), your emotions (Moon) and how you come across (ascendant).

All the planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto with sign, house and degree.

Chiron & Lilith — Your wounded healer and your untamed power — two often overlooked but powerful points.

Personal reading — No boilerplate text. Every reading is created individually for you.

How your birth chart is calculated

A birth chart is an exact snapshot of the sky above your birthplace — at precisely the moment you took your first breath. From date, time and geographic location come the positions of the Sun, the Moon and all the planets along the zodiac, as well as the placement of the houses.

The time of birth matters especially: the ascendant shifts by a whole sign roughly every two hours. Even a 20-minute difference can noticeably change the house structure. If your exact birth time isn't certain, it's worth checking your birth certificate or asking the registry office.

The calculation itself relies on astronomical ephemerides — precise tables of the planetary orbits, the same ones used in spaceflight. Astrology and astronomy share the same mathematical foundation here; the interpretation is then the second, interpretive step.

Understanding Sun, Moon and ascendant

These three points form the backbone of your chart, and it's worth not confusing them. The Sun shows your essential core and where you're developing toward in life — the part of you that wants to express itself outwardly.

The Moon stands for your inner world: how you feel, what you need to feel safe, and how you react in familiar moments. Many people recognize themselves more in their Moon sign than in the well-known sun sign, because it describes what's hidden and habitual.

The ascendant is the way you come across to others and how you approach new things — your first gesture in any situation. Only in the interplay of these three does a coherent picture emerge, one far more nuanced than the statement of any single sign.

Common misconceptions about the birth chart

A birth chart is not a prediction and fixes nothing. It describes dispositions, tensions and possibilities — not a fate you're at the mercy of. How you deal with a disposition remains entirely your decision.

A widespread error, moreover, is equating the sun sign with the whole chart. It describes only the Sun's position. Only the ten planets, the twelve houses and their aspects to one another form the complete pattern that sets you apart from people with the same sun sign.

The so-called difficult aspects shouldn't be understood as negative either. Tense angles often point to areas where friction arises — and that is frequently exactly where drive, depth and potential for growth lie. A chart without any tension would be more uniform than enviable.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the birth chart?

All planetary positions are calculated with Swiss Ephemeris — the gold standard of astronomical calculation, based on NASA's JPL ephemeris (DE431). The accuracy is to the arc-second.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the ascendant and the houses, yes. The more precise your birth time, the more accurate your chart. Without a time we calculate Sun, Moon and planets — the ascendant is then estimated.
