Calculate Vedic astrology

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is one of the oldest astrological systems in the world. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac — the actual constellations in the sky. Birth Codex calculates your Vedic chart with the Lahiri Ayanamsa, including your Nakshatra (lunar mansion) and your Vimshottari Dasha periods.

What your Vedic chart includes

Sidereal planetary positions — All the planets in the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac. The difference from Western astrology is currently about 24 degrees — that can change your sun sign entirely.

Nakshatra (lunar mansion)— The 27 Nakshatras are the heart of Jyotish. Your birth Nakshatra reveals deep personality traits that Western astrology doesn't capture.

Vimshottari Dasha — Your personal planetary cycle: which planet is ruling your life right now? Dasha periods show you the major life phases and their themes.

Personal reading — Your Vedic chart is written personally for you — no boilerplate text.

Sidereal instead of tropical — the decisive difference

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac: it measures the position of the planets against the constellations actually visible in the sky. Western astrology, by contrast, uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the vernal equinox. Because the Earth's axis slowly shifts over millennia, the two systems now diverge by roughly 24 degrees.

In practice this means your star sign in the Vedic system may differ from the one you know from the horoscope in the newspaper. Someone who is an Aries in the West often lands in Pisces in Vedic terms. That is not an error, but a different frame of reference.

The difference is calculated using the so-called Ayanamsa. The most common is the Lahiri Ayanamsa, which is also used officially in India. When you determine your Vedic chart, this correction value is automatically subtracted from the tropical planetary positions.

What your Nakshatra reveals about you

While the zodiac is divided into twelve signs, Vedic astrology additionally recognizes 27 lunar mansions, the Nakshatras. Each spans about 13 degrees and describes a finer character trait than the broad zodiac sign alone. What matters is the position of the Moon at your birth — it determines your birth Nakshatra.

The Nakshatra is considered a key to your inner drive and your emotional baseline. Someone with the Moon in the Nakshatra Ashwini often acts quickly and pioneeringly, whereas Rohini, for example, is geared more toward steadiness, enjoyment and building. Each Nakshatra brings its own strengths, but also recurring stumbling blocks.

In everyday life this knowledge helps you to better understand your spontaneous reactions: where do you act impulsively, where do you need security, when do you feel overwhelmed? Instead of fighting against your pattern, you can learn to use it consciously.

Dasha — the timeline of your life

One feature that clearly sets Vedic astrology apart from the Western kind is the Vimshottari Dasha system. It divides your life into larger segments, each shaped by a particular planet. A Venus period, for instance, lasts 20 years, a Sun period only 6 years. The starting point is calculated from the exact position of your Moon within the Nakshatra.

These periods explain why certain themes in your life are dominant for years and then recede into the background again. In a Jupiter phase the focus is often on growth, learning and questions of meaning; in a Saturn phase more on responsibility, structure and hard work. Within each main period there are finer sub-periods that nuance the picture further.

The practical value lies in timing: you recognize which life phase is currently active and what tasks it brings with it. That doesn't replace a decision, but it helps you channel your energy sensibly — and not wait for results during a building phase that only ripen later.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on the seasons), Vedic astrology the sidereal (based on the actual constellations). Due to the precession of the Earth's axis, the two diverge by about 24 degrees. Your Western sun sign may therefore be different from your Vedic one.

What is a Nakshatra and why does it matter?

Nakshatras are 27 lunar mansions (constellations) that are central to Vedic astrology. Your birth Nakshatra — the lunar mansion at the moment of your birth — describes your emotional nature, your intuition and your deepest drives.

What do Dasha periods show me?

Vimshottari Dashas are planetary time cycles that span your entire life. Each phase is ruled by a different planet and brings specific themes. Birth Codex calculates your current Dasha along with 22 more cosmic systems.
