How to calculate your soul number
The soul number is formed solely from the vowels of your full birth name — that is, A, E, I, O and U. Each vowel is assigned a numeric value: A is 1, E is 5, I is 9, O is 6 and U is 3. Some schools also count Y when it sounds like a vowel, as in names such as Lynn.
You add all the vowel values together and reduce the sum by digit-summing it again and again until a single digit remains — or one of the master numbers 11, 22 or 33. Maria, for instance, becomes A plus I plus A, which gives 1 plus 9 plus 1 equals 11, and therefore a master number that is not reduced further.
What matters is the name that was registered at your birth, not a nickname or a chosen name. If you have several given names, all of them count. Take a moment to work it out cleanly — small slips quickly shift the result by a whole number.
The strengths and shadow sides of your number
Every soul number describes a recurring inner driving force — and that very force has two faces. A One strives for independence and can move you to step forward boldly; in shadow it turns into stubbornness or the fear of asking for help. A Two longs for connection and harmony, yet tends to lose itself behind the needs of others.
It is worth looking honestly at both poles rather than reading only the flattering half. A Six, for example, feels responsible for others and gives care freely — taken to the extreme, that tips into control and the sense of never having done enough. Your strength and your typical stumbling block almost always spring from the same source.
In practical terms: ask yourself in which situations your drive serves you and when it blocks you. The shadow side is not a flaw but a pointer to the place where your strength overcorrects. Once you recognize this, you can respond more consciously instead of automatically.
Soul number, life path number and name number
The soul number is often confused with other numerological values, yet it describes something very specific: your inner motivation, what drives you before you even act. It says less about how you appear on the outside and more about what you wish for at your core.
The life path number, by contrast, is calculated from your date of birth and describes your path and your tasks in life. The name number, or expression number, uses every letter of your name and shows how you present yourself and are perceived. The personality number, in turn, is formed only from the consonants.
These numbers do not contradict one another; they illuminate different levels. It gets interesting when the soul number and the name number diverge — there is often a gap between what you wish for inwardly and what you actually live day to day. That very gap is a good starting point for honest reflection.
