Eclipses 2027: the year of the long totality
2027 brings five eclipses, two solar and three lunar, in two eclipse seasons in February and in July/August. The highlight is the total solar eclipse of August 2: over Egypt the Moon covers the Sun for up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds, one of the longest totalities of the 21st century. In astrology, eclipses are the strongest turning points of the year, moments when developments speed up and a new direction becomes visible.
Three of the five eclipses fall on the axis of Leo and Aquarius, the axis of the heart and of community, where two of the eclipses of 2026 already fell. Which theme this opens for you depends on where these degrees land in your personal birth chart.

The eclipses of 2027 at a glance
- February 6, 2027, Annular solar eclipseSun in Aquarius 17°38′ · new Moon 15:56 UTC
The “ring of fire” crosses Chile, Argentina and the South Atlantic and ends at sunset in the Gulf of Guinea; as a partial eclipse it is visible over South America, Antarctica and western and southern Africa.
- February 20, 2027, Penumbral lunar eclipseMoon in Virgo 2°06′ · full Moon 23:24 UTC
The full Moon passes deep through Earth’s outer shadow, the penumbra; a soft darkening on one edge of the Moon may be noticeable. Visible over the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia.
- July 18, 2027, Penumbral lunar eclipseMoon in Capricorn 25°49′ · full Moon 15:45 UTC
The smallest penumbral eclipse of the century: the Moon only grazes the penumbra, so there is practically nothing to see with the naked eye. It falls over eastern Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific.
- August 2, 2027, Total solar eclipseSun in Leo 9°55′ · new Moon 10:05 UTC
The sky event of the year: the path of totality crosses Morocco, the southern tip of Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. As a partial eclipse it is visible across almost all of Europe and in Africa, the Middle East and western and southern Asia.
- August 17, 2027, Penumbral lunar eclipseMoon in Aquarius 24°12′ · full Moon 07:29 UTC
A little over half of the Moon enters the penumbra, a faint shading at most. Visible over the Pacific and the Americas.
Which of these five eclipses matters most for you depends on your personal chart, on the houses and points they touch in your horoscope. The time given is the exact new or full Moon in UTC.
The total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027
On August 2, 2027 the new Moon in Leo covers the Sun completely. The path of totality, about 258 kilometres wide, crosses North Africa and the Middle East; at the point of greatest eclipse near Luxor in Egypt, totality lasts up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds. On this day the Moon appears especially large and the Sun rather small, which is why the darkness lasts so long.
Astrologically, a solar eclipse in Leo speaks of the heart, of self-expression, creativity and the courage to be seen. At 9°55′ Leo it sets a new beginning in the area of life this degree activates in your chart. You feel it most clearly if your Sun, Moon, ascendant or another personal point sits around 10° Leo, Aquarius, Taurus or Scorpio.
Important for anyone travelling to the path of totality: never look at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses, not even during the partial phases. Only in the minutes of totality itself is it safe to look with the naked eye.
Penumbral lunar eclipses: three quiet full Moons
All three lunar eclipses of 2027 are penumbral eclipses: the full Moon passes only through Earth’s outer shadow and never reaches the dark umbra. It does not turn red; at most it grows a little dimmer on one side. On February 20 this shading is clearly deeper than on August 17, and on July 18 the Moon only just touches the penumbra.
Astrologically, penumbral eclipses still count: they are full Moons close to the lunar nodes that bring something to completion, often more quietly and more inwardly than a total lunar eclipse. The February eclipse in Virgo asks what you are ready to put in order; the full Moons in Capricorn and Aquarius in July and August touch structure, responsibility and the people you belong to.
How the eclipses of 2027 affect you
The decisive question is not “What do the eclipses of 2027 mean?” but “What do they mean for ME?”, and the answer lies in your birth chart. The total solar eclipse at 9°55′ Leo falls into a different house for every person: for one into the house of career, for another into the house of love, and for a third it meets their own Sun or ascendant exactly and becomes their personal turning point of the year.

Enter your birth data above and see in black and white which of the five eclipses of 2027 will be yours. A look back is worth it too: the eclipses of 2026 opened the Leo and Aquarius axis with the solar eclipses of February 17 and August 12, 2026.
Frequently asked questions
When are the eclipses in 2027?✦
2027 has five eclipses: an annular solar eclipse on February 6, penumbral lunar eclipses on February 20, July 18 and August 17, and a total solar eclipse on August 2 over North Africa and the Middle East.
How long does the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 last?✦
At the point of greatest eclipse near Luxor in Egypt, totality lasts up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds (NASA). That makes it one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century; only the eclipse of July 22, 2009 was longer, at 6 minutes and 39 seconds.
Can I see the 2027 solar eclipse from Europe?✦
Yes, as a partial eclipse: across almost all of Europe the Moon moves partly in front of the Sun on August 2, 2027, and in Europe the path of totality itself touches the southern tip of Spain. Always watch only with certified eclipse glasses.
What is a penumbral lunar eclipse?✦
In a penumbral lunar eclipse the full Moon passes only through Earth’s outer shadow. It grows a little dimmer but does not turn red. Astrologically it still counts as an eclipse: a full Moon close to the lunar nodes that brings something to completion.
