Egyptian Decans Calculator
The astronomers of ancient Egypt already divided the zodiac into 36 decans — each sign into three 10° segments. Every decan carries its own planetary sub-ruler (in chaldean order), giving your sun sign a subtle shading: two people with the sun in Leo are not the same — the first, middle or final Leo decan makes all the difference. Birth Codex pinpoints your decan precisely from the sun's longitude — embedded in 23 cosmic systems.

What your decan reveals
The refinement of your sun sign — The decan divides a sign's 30° into three 10° fields. It shows which variety of your star sign you embody — more precisely than the sign alone.
Your planetary sub-ruler — Each decan is co-ruled by a planet (Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn or Jupiter). This sub-ruler lays an additional layer of energy over your nature.
An ancient tradition — The decans are among the oldest astrological systems of all; the Egyptians used them to measure the hours of the night. Birth Codex uses the classical chaldean decan assignment.
In combination — Your decan unfolds its full depth alongside your complete birth chart, Human Design and the other systems of your Birth Codex reading.
How your decan is determined
Each of the twelve star signs spans exactly 30° of the zodiac. These 30° are split into three equal segments of 10° each — the decans. So what matters is not only which sign the sun stood in at your birth, but on which degree within that sign.
If the sun stood between 0° and 9°59', you fall into the first decan; between 10° and 19°59', the second; from 20° onward, the third. Since the sun moves just under one degree per day, your decan depends on whether you were born at the start, the middle or the end of the sign's period.
In practice this means: if your birthday lies close to a sign change, it is worth looking carefully at the sun's longitude. A single day can shift you from the third decan of one sign into the first of the next — and noticeably change the shading of your signature.
Three faces of a sign
Each decan receives its own planetary sub-ruler, adding a second voice to the keynote of your sun sign. The first decan carries the purest, unfiltered version of the sign — here the theme shows itself most directly. The second and third decans blend in further influences and shift the emphasis noticeably.
Two people with the same star sign can therefore feel surprisingly different. An Aries in the first decan often comes across as impulsive and driving, while the same Aries in the third decan can appear more strategic and far-sighted. The sign stays the same, but the emphasis moves.
This knowledge helps you place yourself more precisely. If something about your star sign has always bothered or puzzled you, the explanation often lies in the decan — it accounts for the nuances the sun sign alone leaves open.
Telling the decan and ascendant apart
The decan is often confused with the ascendant, because both add to your sun sign. The crucial difference: your decan derives solely from the degree of the sun and needs neither birth time nor birthplace. The ascendant, by contrast, changes roughly every two hours and can only be determined with an exact time.
This makes the decan more robust and usable even when you don't know your precise birth time. It refines the inner shading of your nature, while the ascendant describes more how you come across outwardly and how others first perceive you.
So don't treat the two as rivals, but as different levels. The decan deepens the understanding of your fundamental nature; the ascendant adds the perspective of your outward impression. Together they create a far sharper picture than the sun sign on its own.
Frequently asked questions
What is a decan in astrology?✦
A decan is a 10° segment of a star sign — each of the 12 signs has three decans, 36 in total. Every decan has its own planetary sub-ruler and refines the meaning of your sun sign.
How is my decan calculated?✦
From the exact longitude of the sun at your birth: the first 10° of a sign are the 1st decan, 10–20° the 2nd, 20–30° the 3rd. Birth Codex calculates this with Swiss Ephemeris — as part of 23 cosmic systems.
What's the difference between a decan and a star sign?✦
The star sign spans 30°, the decan refines it to 10°. Two people with the same star sign can have different decans (and sub-rulers) — which explains why they differ noticeably despite sharing the same sign.
