Chart Ruler — which planet rules you?
One single planet sets the tone of your whole chart. Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your ascendant — the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Because the ascendant frames the stage of your entire chart, its ruler colors every one of your readings.
The pairing is ancient and clearly fixed: each of the twelve signs has its classic ruler, and three signs also have a modern one. Which planet rules you depends only on your ascendant — and Birth Codex calculates that from your date, time and place of birth, down to the minute.

What is a chart ruler?
In astrology every zodiac sign "belongs" to a planet — its ruler. Aries has always been assigned to Mars, Taurus to Venus, Cancer to the Moon. This pairing dates back to a time when only the wandering stars visible to the naked eye were known, and it is still the backbone of how signs are read.
The ruler of one particular sign becomes your chart ruler: the ruler of your ascendant. If your ascendant is in Libra, for example, Venus is your chart ruler — and wherever Venus then sits in your chart becomes a guide to the whole picture. That makes the chart ruler a deeply personal marker: not a Sun sign shared by millions, but a point that depends on your exact birth time.
The 12 ascendants and their rulers
This table shows which planet rules each ascendant sign — classic and, where there is one, modern. Find the row of your ascendant, and you know your chart ruler.
| Ascendant | Classic ruler | Modern ruler |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mars | — |
| Taurus | Venus | — |
| Gemini | Mercury | — |
| Cancer | Moon | — |
| Leo | Sun | — |
| Virgo | Mercury | — |
| Libra | Venus | — |
| Scorpio | Mars | Pluto |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | — |
| Capricorn | Saturn | — |
| Aquarius | Saturn | Uranus |
| Pisces | Jupiter | Neptune |
"—" means the classic and modern ruler are the same planet here. Only Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces gained an extra modern ruler when the outer planets were discovered.

Jupiter — Scope, meaning and optimism. You are pulled outward — toward knowledge, experience and growth.
Saturn — Structure, responsibility and endurance. You build for the long run and carry what you start.
Uranus — Freedom and originality (modern ruler of Aquarius). You take your own path and think against the grain.
Neptune — Compassion and imagination (modern ruler of Pisces). You sense more than words can hold.
Pluto — Depth and transformation (modern ruler of Scorpio). You move through real sheddings and come out stronger.
Which planet rules me?
To find your chart ruler you first need your ascendant — and that depends on your exact birth time, because it changes sign roughly every two hours. So the birth date alone is not enough: the time and place belong to it.
Enter your data above, and Birth Codex determines your ascendant with the Swiss Ephemeris — the astronomical standard that observatories rely on — and names your chart ruler automatically. After that you see not only which planet rules you, but also which sign and house it sits in for you.
Your chart ruler is one of 23 systems that come together in your full reading — from the ascendant through your planetary placements to the Eastern traditions. That turns a single marker into a whole picture, calculated for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is my chart ruler?✦
Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your ascendant sign. It sets the tone for your whole chart: wherever that planet sits — in which sign and house — colors your entire reading.
How do I find my chart ruler?✦
First you need your ascendant. Its sign has a classic ruler (and, for three signs, a modern one too) — that planet is your chart ruler. Birth Codex finds both your ascendant and its ruler automatically from your birth data.
Do I need my birth time?✦
Yes. The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so your chart ruler depends on your exact birth time. Without a time it cannot be pinned down reliably — check your birth certificate if you are unsure.
Classic or modern ruler?✦
Classical astrology assigns each sign one of the seven bodies visible to the naked eye. After Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, modern astrology gave three signs a second ruler: Scorpio (Pluto), Aquarius (Uranus) and Pisces (Neptune). Both views are in common use — Birth Codex shows you both.
