Chakras — your energy centers

The 7 chakras are energy centers in your body that have been described in the Vedic tradition for thousands of years. In Human Design these energy centers appear as the 9 centers of the bodygraph — an evolution of the chakra system. Which centers are defined (colored in) or open in you determines how you take in, process and bring energy into the world. Birth Codex calculates your defined centers as part of a comprehensive reading covering 23 cosmic systems.

Chakras and Human Design centers

Root to crown — The 7 traditional chakras — root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow and crown — find their counterpart in the 9 centers of the Human Design bodygraph.

Defined centers — A defined (colored) center in your bodygraph signals a constant, reliable energy. This is where you radiate outward and influence others.

Open centers — Open (white) centers are your receiving antennas. Here you take in the energy of others, amplify it and learn from it — but this is also where the potential for conditioning lies.

From the root to the crown chakra

The seven main chakras run along your spine, from the pelvic floor to the crown of the head. The root chakra stands for safety and grounding, the sacral chakra for creativity and desire, the solar plexus chakra for willpower and self-worth. Above these follow the heart chakra (connection and compassion), the throat chakra (expression and truth), the brow chakra (perception and intuition) and the crown chakra (meaning and the bigger picture).

This model is not a measurement but a map for your inner attention. It helps you sort out which area of life currently holds a lot of energy and where something feels blocked or overdriven. If you often feel uprooted, it's worth looking at the root chakra; if you can't find the words, at the throat chakra.

How chakras are determined

In the classical understanding, chakras are not calculated from your birth date but experienced through self-awareness: through bodily sensation, observing the breath and honest reflection. You sense where things feel tight or open rather than having a formula dictate it to you.

The link to the moment of birth only arises through the Human Design centers, which really are calculated from date, time and place. Several of these nine centers can be matched to the chakras — the throat center to the throat chakra, for example. This gives you a concrete, data-based complement to purely felt chakra work.

The distinction matters: a defined Human Design center does not automatically mean an open chakra. Defined means reliable and constant; open means permeable and receptive. Both have strengths, and neither state is better than the other.

Using chakras in everyday life

You don't have to balance everything perfectly. It makes more sense to choose one or two areas that need attention right now. If you feel insecure and driven, grounding routines help: fixed sleep times, movement, clear finances — that is root work in everyday life.

For expression themes around the throat chakra, concrete practice helps: having an uncomfortable conversation, voicing boundaries, writing something down instead of only thinking it. With the heart chakra it is less about grand gestures than about small, genuine encounters in which you don't pretend to be someone else.

A common misunderstanding is that a blocked chakra is a defect you have to repair. It is more realistic to read it as a hint: here you are not quite living freely right now. Simply translating vague unease into a clear area of life is what makes the model practically valuable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chakras and Human Design centers?

The classical chakra system describes 7 energy centers. Human Design expands this system to 9 centers and adds a crucial dimension: whether a center is defined or open in you. This information is individual and is calculated from your birth data.

Can I open or close my chakras?

In Human Design your defined and open centers are fixed from birth. It is not about opening or closing centers but about living your energy correctly: using the strength of your defined centers and developing the wisdom of your open ones.

Which centers are defined in me?

You find this out through your Birth Codex reading. From your birth data the exact planetary positions are calculated, which determine which of the 9 centers are defined in you. In total Birth Codex calculates 23 cosmic systems for your profile.
